Austin Burton made his first career start for Purdue on Saturday against Florida Atlantic
Quarterback Aidan O’Connell will miss Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic paving the way for Austin Burton to make his first Purdue start.and was considered questionable throughout the week. He was labeled a game-time decision to face the Owls. The hope is the sixth-year quarterback will return next week when the Boilermakers re-start Big Ten play at Minnesota.
O’Connell didn’t go through warmups prior to kickoff, all but cementing his absence from the Homecoming matchup. Michael Alaimo moves to the backup role followed by freshman Brady Allen.Purdue will certainly miss the steady presence of O’Connell, who has eight touchdown passes and one interception in the first three games. He’s thrown for 1,000 yards and completed 64.2% of his passes against Penn State, Indiana State and the Orange.
Burton’s sample size isn’t very large since he’s attempted 10 passes after transferring from UCLA. Burton was part of the three quarterback rotation during the win at Iowa last season.
