Kyah Simon and Chloe Logarzo are among a handful of injury-affected Matildas who will be given until the 11th hour to prove their fitness for the FIFA Women’s World Cup after being named in a provisional 29-player squad by coach Tony Gustavsson.
The Matildas will unveil their final 23-player squad on July 3, which means six names from the selection released on Monday morning will miss the cut. There are no shock inclusions, but the presence of Simon in particular is a surprise. The 31-year-old, who missed the previous World Cup through injury, tore her ACL in October while playing for Tottenham Hotspur. She refused to give up hope of recovering in time – even though it seemed unlikely.
There was no room for defender Matilda McNamara or winger Holly McNamara – and the exclusion of the former, perhaps, could be seen as a vote of confidence in Kennedy’s ability to hit top shape in the coming weeks.
“I have been impressed by their full commitment at every step, and now we have the chance to fine tune and solidify our gameplan ahead of a phenomenally exciting couple of weeks.
