Outgoing manager Terry Francona says injured pitchers will benefit from their late-season starts.
It wasn’t a great start, but it was better than the one against Baltimore on Sept. 24 when McKenzie walked six and allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings. It was his first big-league start since June 10 against Houston when he strained the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.“When I left the mound, I said how’s your arm?” said manager Terry Francona. “He said good. I mean those are big steps for him to take. He’s not in midseason form, but those are two huge steps.
This was lost year for McKenzie. He strained the teres major muscle in his right shoulder in his last start in spring training and opened the year on the IL. He was activated and made starts on June 4 and June 10 before returning to the IL. Quantrill , like McKenzie, made two trips to the injured list this season with an impingement in his right shoulder. But he wasn’t down as long as McKenzie or Bieber.
The first one was so-so against the Orioles on Sept. 22. He allowed five run, four earned, in five innings. He struck out five, walked one and allowed six hits.
