Ingraham High School students walked out of class to commemorate the two-year anniversary of a deadly shooting.
Several students at Ingraham High School walked out of class holding signs and chanting for more security and mental health resources two years after a 17-year-old student was gunned down in the hallway.
Ingraham High School students walked out of class on Friday to commemorate the two-year anniversary of a shooting that left one student dead. Many of them recall racing into lockdown that day and allege the district has failed for two years to answer their pleas for more security. Since that day, KOMO News has covered countless rallies and walkouts where students have demanded more mental health and security support. Now that this senior class will graduate soon, they consider Friday's march as an attempt to make a difference for future generations. Dozens of students -- many of them seniors -- walked out of class around 10 a.m. and held a moment of silence for the shooting victim,. They marched along the sidewalk in front of campus with their signs while chanting for the district to help keep them safe.“I just remember being terrified and walking out of the, where I hid the paint room, walking out of the paint room, walking through the halls didn't feel the same. It still doesn't feel the same,” Magdaleno explained. “There's not a day goes by at the school where I'm not checking every door, every exit.” "I think there's a lot of people who don't understand the gravity of the situation," a senior named Adrien added. Additionally, they're urging the school to hire more counselors and install a buzzer system to keep entrance doors locked during school hours, with the exception of lunchtime and passing periods. That would prevent just anyone from walking onto campus, and it's a system used at other Seattle Public Schools high schools. "I think that we need more mental health support within the school. We have like two therapists who are available maybe for an hour a day and are very hard to come by," senior Cici Kennedy said. KOMO News reached out to SPS about students’ concerns and a spokesperson said they are working on a response. The city has recently made significant investments in mental health support for students district-wide. In August, Mayor Bruce Harrell announcedfor more counselors, on-campus security, and a Seattle Police Department presence around 11 schools seeing the highest rates of violence. KOMO News is working to find out how many counselors have been hired, and how many are dedicated here at IHS.
