This bid, submitted unsolicited, dwarfs the initial $3.5 million proposal made by First United American during the failed December bankruptcy auction.
This development comes shortly after a bankruptcy judge voided the previous auction, citing a flawed bidding process and insufficient funds for creditors. Global Tetrahedron, the parent company of The Onion, is also expected to submit a revised offer in the coming days.The fate of Infowars, headquartered in Jones' hometown of Austin, Texas, remains uncertain. The original auction, which saw The Onion emerge as the victor with a $1.75 million bid, was ultimately quashed by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez. Judge Lopez determined that the auction lacked transparency and failed to generate adequate revenue for creditors. He also expressed concerns regarding the nature and value of The Onion's bid, highlighting the ambiguity surrounding its intentions. The sale of Infowars, along with many of Jones' personal assets, is expected to primarily benefit the Sandy Hook families who secured over $1.4 billion in a Connecticut defamation lawsuit and approximately $50 million in a Texas lawsuit against Jones. These lawsuits stemmed from Jones' repeated assertions that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which tragically claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators, was a hoax perpetrated to advance gun control measures. A recent agreement between the families involved in both lawsuits outlines a distribution plan for the proceeds from the sales, ensuring that families from the Texas suit will receive at least $4 million, while the Connecticut suit families will receive at least $12 million. Any additional funds exceeding $12 million for the Connecticut families will be shared with the Texas suit families, with a 25% allocation. The agreement awaits final approval from Judge Lopez.
