There has been an influx of stranded turtle hatchlings on beaches around the Western Cape.

The appeal comes amid the so-called “turtle stranded season” and forms part of the aquarium's Rescue, Rehab and Release programme.Conservation co-ordinator Talitha Noble says the turtles end up being washed up on the beach for a variety of reasons. “Every year we have large loggerhead and leatherback turtles that lay their eggs on our coastline and at beginning of the year those turtles hatch and they make their way to the sea."

"They get caught in our warm Aghulas current down the coastline and then they find themselves in our coastal waters which is much too cold for them and so due to injury and cold shock and dehydration they wash up on the beaches", said
