Influential evangelical leader James Dobson, who declared war on same-sex marriage and abortion, has died, his namesake family institute announcedDobson, who used to host a popular radio show advising Christian parents on how to raise their children, in 1977 founded Focus on the Family, an organization that evolved into an $140 million empire,“Well, homosexuals want to, first of all, change the definition of marriage, which is a major problem for us. The family was designed for a purpose. And if you go to tampering with it, the whole thing crumbles,” he said. “See, if two men can be married or two women, where do you stop that? Two men and three women? Four men and one woman? You open the polygamy debate again,” he added.In a 2004 campaign event for then-GOP candidate Tom Coburn, Dobson urged the audience to reach out to gay people and “bring them to Jesus.”the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in June 2015 “hit me like a ton of bricks.”Dobson left Focus on the Family in 2010 and went on to launch the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute and hosted Family Talk, a nationally syndicated radio broadcast. Dr. James Dobson, who founded Focus on the Family, offers a prayer before an appearance by President Donald Trump at a campaign rally, Feb. 20, 2020, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.Dobson welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v.
