Food banks across the state are reporting increases in demand anywhere from 10% to 60%.
Food banks across New Jersey are seeing sustained, increased demand this holiday season, with officials attributing the causes to ongoing inflation and high rent increases.for Thanksgiving in Monmouth and Ocean counties alone, said Triada Stampas, the nonprofit’s president and CEO.
The increase can be attributed to a combination of inflation and the termination of several government relief measures, including stimulus payments, the child tax credit and rental assistance, she said. And although unemployment numbers are low, salaries have not kept up with the cost of living, she said.
“Unfortunately, the truth is that for many of the households that are at risk of being food insecure, or food insecure, rent eats first,” Rodriguez said, noting he’s seen “exorbitant” three-digit rental increases in some cases. He said it’s unclear when or if demand will subside. And even though the nonprofit is serving as many people as it was in August, now — around the holidays — is when “people’s hearts open up.”
