The price of clothes, furniture and appliances, and other consumer goods have fallen and helped bring the inflation rate to lower than market economists expected in the June quarter, but the cost of some services remains high.

The Reserve Bank will feel less pressure to lift interest rates next month after unexpectedly soft inflation figures showed price pressures have eased across key consumer goods such as furniture, appliances and clothes.

Underpinning the fall in headline inflation in June was smaller price rises for goods and easing pressures in the construction sector. However, while inflation has slowed in some parts of the CPI basket, the easing has not been universal.
