A group of migrants waded into the Rio Grande near Brownsville, carrying a baby to its mother on the far side. They barely made it.

By Lara’s account, migrants moved along the Rio Grande near Matamoros this week looking for a place to cross, only to be deterred again and again by the conspicuous presence of U.S. border agents and Texas National Guardsmen, along with coils of freshly laid concertina wire. Then the next group waded in, and the infant was handed down to them from the riverbank. The men took turns holding the precious bundle, passing the infant forward to the next set of waiting hands.
