INDIANAPOLIS — Allison Melangton lives in Indianapolis now, but grew up in Lewiston, Maine and traveled there to be with her family and community after
"It's a wonderful state with wonderful people and this has just been a horrific tragedy," Melangton said. "Maine is really never in the national spotlight. To have this be the topic and a tragedy has also been very difficult," Melangton said."I was in the grocery store. People were hugging each other and didn't even know each other. It's a relief to get out. It's a relief to get back to normal and see people and treasure life," Melangton said.
"Not knowing where he was and he could show up at any time was probably the worst part after the initial shooting and it traumatized everyone here," Melangton said. In a town where everybody knows everyone, she said there's going to be few people in the community not touched by this tragedy. "It's such a small community and so many people are related that it's touching everyone. It's so sad. The next couple of weeks are going to be important as they have vigils and there are 18 funerals to plan. I know everybody is going to show up for everybody," Melangton said."They are resilient and hardy and deeply loving and caring," Melangton said."The gentleman that did this is not representative at all of the people here," Melangton said.
