Industrial consumers of electricity can save as much as 50 percent on their annual power bills by powering off during the hottest days of the year. While that reduces demand, creating a buffer, it shifts some costs onto residential ratepayers.

As much as half of industrial users’ annual bills are tied to transmission and distribution costs. Those costs are calculated based on how much power they use during a 15-minute period four days out of the year. Those days are the days of highest demand on the grid during the months of June, July, August and September.

ERCOT’s independent market monitor recommended in as 2021 State of the Market Report that the nonprofit grid manager should consider abandoninghe Four Coincident Peak method. Christy Penders, a spokeswoman for ERCOT, said she was not aware of any conversations about changing the model, and such a decision on that would likely be up to the Public Utility Commission, the state’s electricity regulaor.
