Torrential rains caused widespread flooding and landslides in Indonesia, particularly in Central Java, resulting in significant loss of life and destruction. Rescue efforts are underway but hampered by difficult conditions.
Torrential rains triggered devastating floods and landslides in Indonesia, particularly in the Pekalongan regency of Central Java province, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Videos and photos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency showcased the catastrophic impact, with roads and rice fields transformed into muddy debris, villages buried under thick mud, rocks, and uprooted trees.
The relentless downpour caused rivers to overflow, inundating nine villages and unleashing landslides that swept through mountainside hamlets. The disaster claimed at least 13 lives, with seven individuals still missing. Two houses and a cafe were buried under tons of mud and rocks in the Petungkriyono resort area, while 25 houses, a dam, and three main bridges connecting villages were destroyed. Nearly 300 people were displaced and forced to seek refuge in temporary government shelters. The rescue operation, hindered by treacherous weather conditions, mudslides, and mountainous terrain, faced further challenges due to heavy rain and thick fog that made access to disaster-stricken areas extremely hazardous. On Wednesday, rescue personnel resumed their search efforts, focusing on the hardest-hit Kasimpar village. They combed through rivers and the debris-strewn villages, desperately searching for bodies and survivors. Indonesia's archipelago, comprised of 17,000 islands, is particularly vulnerable to floods and landslides during the monsoon season, which spans from October to March. Millions of Indonesians reside in mountainous regions or along fertile floodplains, making them susceptible to these natural disasters. The British Geological Survey defines a landslide as a mass movement of earth, rock, or debris down a slope, often triggered by factors such as rainfall, erosion, or changes in the slope's composition.
