Findings from community consultations will help shape a feasibility study for under the federal First Nations and Inuit Policing Program.
PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte, federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendocino and Saskatchewan Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Christine Tell signed the agreement on Monday. The letter of intent “formalizes a shared commitment to ensure effective and culturally appropriate police services for our 12 member Nations,” Hardlotte said.Following the Sept. 4 mass stabbing on James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Sask. that killed 11 people and injured 18, calls for First Nations-led policing have grown louder. Sole suspect Myles Sanderson, 32, died in RCMP custody after his arrest on Sept. 7.
Families of the victims, James Smith Cree Nation Chief Wally Burns, Chief Rob Head of the Peter Chapman Band and Chief Calvin Sanderson of the Chakastaypasin Band met with Mendocino earlier Monday morning. He spoke with media at an availability in the community following the meeting. Mendicino said he had a heavy and difficult visit with families of those killed in the mass stabbing.
