IISc Researchers unveil an indigenous GaN Power Switch poised to transform electronics, and reduce dependence on imports.

Dr. Digbijoy Nath, an Associate Professor at CeNSE and the corresponding author of the research study described GaN technology as "promising and disruptive." However, the import restrictions on GaN materials and devices have posed significant challenges for researchers in India.

The team harnessed a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique, meticulously honed over a decade by experts within the lab of Professor Srinivasan Raghavan, Professor and Chair of CeNSE.silicon The team also collaborated with Associate Professor Kaushik Basu and his lab from the Department of Electrical Engineering to build an electrical circuit employing these transistors, subsequently evaluating their switching performance.

This shift required the ingenious combination of the GaN transistor with a commercially available silicon transistor, effectively achieving the desired functionality. "The packaging of the device was also indigenously developed," said Rijo Baby, a Ph.D. student at CeNSE and first author of the study.
