The 20-year-old, from the Kokama tribe, was the first confirmed case among Brazil’s more than 300 clans.
She tested positive for Covidd-19 in the Amazonas state, close to the Colombian border, according to the Health Ministry’s indigenous health service Sesai.
There have now been four confirmed cases in the same district, including a doctor, sparking fears the disease could reach remote villages and spread like wildfire among communities with little immunity to diseases and limited healthcare access. An employee of the Special Secretariat for Indigenous Health checks the temperature of a member of the Tikuna ethnic group in Lago Grande, Amazonas state Sesai said the infected woman was a medical worker who had been in contact with the doctor and had returned from a break to work with the Tikunas, one of the Amazon’s largest tribes comprising more than 30,000 people living close to the borders with Colombia and Peru.
