An Indianapolis couple faces charges after their 8-year-old daughter died from fentanyl intoxication. Police allege that the parents, Lee Cooksey and Brittany Warr, neglected their daughter's medical needs and that the home environment was unsafe.
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis parents Lee Cooksey and Brittany Warr were arrested on January 29th for Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death. The arrest stems from the death of their 8-year-old daughter, who died from fentanyl intoxication. Upon arrival at the family's residence, police were met by the parents carrying the child. They told authorities that their daughter had a history of seizures but expressed concerns that she might have swallowed something.
The child was transported to Riley Children's Hospital where she later died. Court documents revealed that detectives at the hospital became suspicious of the father's account. Cooksey alleged that his daughter often puts things in her mouth and that he saw her with something outside in the back alley. He also expressed worries that she might have come into contact with drugs. Detectives confirmed that the girl suffered from cerebral palsy, but her parents stated she had not taken her medication for over a year, claiming she was allowed to 'set her own boundaries' regarding her care. Further investigation revealed that the family had a history with DCS involving drug use and physical abuse, leading to immediate involvement of IMPD Child Abuse detectives. Detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant for the family's home, describing it as very dirty and cluttered. During the search, evidence collected from the parents' phones included text messages from Cooksey to Warr indicating he was going to obtain 'dope' from 'bro.' Warr also allegedly admitted to police that the child could have ingested cocaine or marijuana. The Marion County Coroner's Office determined the child's cause of death to be acute fentanyl intoxication. Warr and Cooksey are scheduled for an initial hearing on February 4th at 9 a.m
