Indiana University is facing criticism for a course titled 'Understanding Diversity in a Pluralistic Society' that allegedly prompts students to identify themselves as 'oppressors' based on their race, sex, and religion. The course, offered by the School of Social Work, encourages students to analyze 'theories and models' to understand societal diversity and examines the experiences of 'selected minority groups' in relation to the 'majority group.' Documents show that the class instructor, Colleen Rose, asks students to reflect on two identities, one 'subordinate' and one 'dominant,' categorizing groups like LGBTQ individuals, women, and religious and ethnic minorities as 'subordinate' and heterosexual, white, able-bodied people, Christians, and men as 'dominant,' suggesting they are responsible for 'social oppression.' Students have expressed concerns about being forced to suppress their identities and labelled as privileged based on these categorizations.
Indiana University is teaching students that they are inherently “oppressors” because of their race, sex and religion, documents show.
It added that the “groups include, but are not limited to, people of color, women, and gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons.” The student went on to say, “It’s very rich that in a class where we are supposed to be talking about identity and not suppressing identity, I’m forced to suppress my own identity… I have to suppress myself because I’m presumed to be some privileged, horrible human being that didn’t grow up without food. That’s insane to me.”
