Indiana has two top-50 RPI foes left: at No. 19 Penn State and Northwestern in the following weeks. As the Hoosiers are running out of time to bolster their postseason résumé, Saturday's result is of utmost importance — also for the Big Ten title hunt.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Many underlined two matches on Indiana soccer’s schedule at the start of the season. Preseason-ranked No. 6 Washington in September, and No. 3 Kentucky in October. Both were the top two national seeds in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Nonetheless, the Indiana-Washington match at Bloomington in the first week of September delivered the anticipated excitement and tense moments, breaking five-year attendance records, as Washington escaped with the 1-0 shutout. When Indiana and Kentucky met in Lexington Tuesday, the two border rivals traded goals, and combined for 11 shots on target.
Suddenly, Indiana’s next match on Saturday at No. 19 Penn State has become crucial for postseason implications. Penn State is just one of two top-50 RPI teams that remain on Indiana’s schedule, with No. 12 Northwestern later this month. Indiana surely needs both for an at-large bid. Penn State has seven points; Indiana has two. The Hoosiers and the Nittany Lions are tied atop the conference in the fewest goals allowed with six, but Penn State has more than doubled Indiana's goal output. Tuesday marked another bitter draw for Indiana, owning the second half, though failing to convert. Saturday will be a challenge for finding the put-away goal and scoring twice, which the Hoosiers have not accomplished since their second match in late August.
