Similar to the Amber Alert system, a Green Alert will let people know a veteran is missing and in need of help.INDIANAPOLIS — There are many veterans facing a slew of challenges, from physical injuries to mental health, homelessness to substance abuse.
Dr. Lionel Rush is a veteran and head of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Indianapolis. He and seven of his brothers served."Physically, their body came back but their mind didn't come back," said Rush."I hear the same thing with Gulf War vets, Afghanistan vets. I hear the same story because you cannot unsee stuff."
State lawmakers passed a bill during the 2024 legislative session to help at-risk veterans. It's called the Green Alert Law and it is similar to Amber Alert system. It lets people know a veteran is missing and in need of help. The new alert could be crucial for veterans suffering from the sights and sounds that can happen during the Fourth of July holiday.
"Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for veterans, especially younger veterans, so having tools in place to let law enforcement know there is a person who served our country in crisis in their community and they need help I think is a really important first step," said Emmy Hildebrand of Helping Veterans and Families."The reality is that 80% of the veterans we serve at HVAF report a mental health diagnosis or substance use diagnosis," said Hildebrand.
"It's very, very important to me that people that volunteer to go out and serve this nation and put themselves in harm's way that when they get back to America that they need to be respected," said Rush.
