James Mangold, who is attached to direct Swamp Thing for the DC Universe, clarifies how the horror film will tie into James Gunn's plans. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While Swamp Thing is set in the DC Universe, Mangold has opened up more about how the reboot actually fits into Gunn's upcoming franchise. In an interview with Variety, the filmmaker shared how he got the gig, but also how Swamp Thing will be able to stand on its own without having any direct collision with the other Chapter 1 movies that are coming up.
While I’m sure DC views ‘Swamp Thing’ as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster. [I] put in a friendly call [when James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC last fall]. Just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone. Why Mangold's Swamp Thing Update Is Good News For The DC Universe Swamp Thing focusing more on telling its own story within the DC Universe is a great sign for the future of the cinematic universe.
Back when DC Studios announced their initial slate of projects, Gunn and Safran made it clear that their priority is for each DC Universe movie and show to have a great story rather than force connectivity and crossovers for the sake of it. Based on Mangold's comments for Swamp Thing, DC Studios is clearly not looking to follow DC Films' past mistakes with rushed team-ups.
