After a disappointing start, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s box office has now passed its budget, but it’s still far from breaking even.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has finally surpassed its own production budget at the box office, but it still has a ways to go before it's profitable. Directed by James Mangold, the fifth installment in the long-running adventure franchise sees star Harrison Ford playing the intrepid archeologist for one last adventure. Despite enduring love for the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been a significant box office disappointment thus far.
Now, according to Box Office Mojo, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's box office has exceeded $302 million worldwide, surpassing its estimated production budget of $295 million. Despite passing this new milestone, however, the film has still not broken even and become profitable, with the sizable production budget not including the tens of millions spent on press and advertising.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Why Dial Of Destiny Has Disappointed At The Box Office There are a number of reasons why Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's box office has proven to be a disappointment. Ford remains a beloved actor, but he's now 80 years old, and someone of his age is unlikely to draw younger audiences to theaters. Although love for the first three Indiana Jones movies persists, the first film was released over 40 years ago.
There's also the fact that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull proved quite divisive upon its release in 2008. The film made several controversial decisions and is widely regarded as the weakest entry in the franchise. Also working against Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny were the film's mixed reviews out of its Cannes premiere and a general lack of interest in the film from key international markets like China.
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was always going to be a tough sell in the Hollywood blockbuster landscape of today, the fact that the film cost nearly $300 million really set it up for failure. This is more than $100 million greater than the budget of the fourth entry and is the biggest of the franchise by far, and it set the bar for success so much higher.
