The Mullaperiyar Dam, constructed in 1895 during the colonial occupation of India by Britain. has joined a campaign demanding the government to ensure the safety of 3.5 million people, mostly Christians, who live downstream of a 129-year-old British-era dam.
The water from the dam is diverted through a tunnel to the Vaigai basin in drought-prone Tamil Nadu, where it irrigates 68,558 hectares of land. However, the Tamil Nadu government fears it might not get any water if a new dam replaces the old one, as the old agreement will not be respected. Advocate Dean Kuriakose, who represents Idukki in parliament, raised the demand for its decommissioning in a notice for special discussion on Aug. 7.
In a 2021 report, the Canada-based Institute for Water, Environment and Health said that approximately 3.5 million people living downstream would be at risk if the Mullaperiyar Dam"were to fail."
