The country’s space agency doesn’t yet know if the mission was successful.
This photo released by the Indian Space Research Organization shows its Geosynchronous Satellite launch Vehicle MkIII carrying Chandrayaan-2 lift off from Satish Dhawan Space center in Sriharikota, India, Monday, July 22, 2019. India: India’s first attempt at landing a spacecraft on the moon may have ended in failure on Saturday after the country’s space agency lost contact with the lander moments before it was supposed to land on the moon.
The initial stages of the launch went as planned, but then less than two miles away from the moon’s surface, engineers lost contact with the lander. The Indian Space Research Organization is analyzing the data to find out what happened, but it is unclear if the lander crashed or if there was a communications error.
If successful, the mission may make India the fourth country to land a craft on the moon, joining the U.S., Russia and China. “They’ve given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be!” The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter was launched into space on July 22 and had been taking a long route to the moon.
