India Amarteifio has studied Shakespeare in drama school, she’s acted in period pieces, she’s been a devout fan of theatre. Still, she’s never had her hair done the way it is in: intricate, ornate, but still wholly embracing her natural curl pattern.
In the show, Charlotte has to endure various microaggressions — her skin tone being lightened in portraits, for one — and also has people trying to rub the “brown” off her skin. At times, it feels a little close to reality, a far cry from the harmonious, diverse world we’ve grown accustomed to in this popular period piece.is so beautiful and diverse is because Queen Charlotte sets the foundations for what you see on the show,” Amarteifio says.
“She kind of instilled in me how important it is to put your all into something in order to reap the rewards,” Amarteifio says. “Watching her really gave me inspiration and gave me the drive to want to keep pushing in a career that is really difficult to succeed in.”that was the first time a director asked her questions about her character and gave her a backstory.
