The blood sucking parasites were said to have been found on children in the park on Bent Lane in Leyland, sparking fears of Lyme disease

Fears of Lyme disease have been sparked after blood sucking parasites were spotted on children in a park in Leyland.

She added: “Leyland Council wants to leave the field for the bees and the butterflies but I am sure they could find another area to do this - not where children play and the dog walkers are.” The grandmother added: “I checked my granddaughter and thank goodness I could not see any, but until the grass is cut, I won’t take her on there! They are very tiny but you will find them when they are full of blood.

The UK Health Security Agency says Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be passed onto humans when they are bitten by an infected tick, and that people are most likely to encounter them when doing things in the countryside or in green spaces like woodland, some urban parks or gardens. Ticks are most active in spring and summer but can be found all year round, with 3000 estimated cases of Lyme disease diagnosed in England every year.

According to the NHS, Lyme disease is easier to treat if diagnosed early. An early symptom of it can be a circular or oval-shaped rash around a tick bite in some people, which can appear up to three months after a bite from an infected tick, but usually appears within one month, lasting for several weeks.

Not all ticks in England carry Lyme disease, it adds, although they can be found all over the UK, mostly in grassy and wooded places. Tick bites are sometimes painless and can be removed safely using tweezers or a tick removal tool which can be bought from pharmacies, vets or pet shops. Councillor Mick Titherington, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Leisure at South Ribble Borough Council, said: "The Strawberry Valley Park in Leyland is an excellent facility for residents, and we are pleased that it is being used by so many people. We have not had any reports of ticks being found on visitors of Strawberry Valley Park nor at any of our locations where we have long grass and meadows.

Differential Pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern in Human ACE2-Expressing MiceDifferential Pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern in Human ACE2-Expressing MiceSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused the current pandemic, resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. Increasingly contagious variants of concern (VoC) have fueled recurring global infection waves. A major question is the relative severity of the disease caused by previous and currently circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we evaluated the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 variants in human ACE-2-expressing (K18-hACE2) mice. Eight-week-old K18-hACE2 mice were inoculated intranasally with a representative virus from the original B.1 lineage or from the emerging B.1.1.7 (alpha), B.1.351 (beta), B.1.617.2 (delta), or B.1.1.529 (omicron) lineages. We also infected a group of mice with the mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 (MA10). Our results demonstrate that B.1.1.7, B.1.351 and B.1.617.2 viruses are significantly more lethal than the B.1 strain in K18-hACE2 mice. Infection with the B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and B.1.617.2 variants resulted in significantly higher virus titers in the lungs and brain of mice compared with the B.1 virus. Interestingly, mice infected with the B.1.1.529 variant exhibited less severe clinical signs and a high survival rate. We found that B.1.1.529 replication was significantly lower in the lungs and brain of infected mice in comparison with other VoC. The transcription levels of cytokines and chemokines in the lungs of B.1- and B.1.1.529-infected mice were significantly less when compared with those challenged with other VoC. Together, our data provide insights into the pathogenesis of previous and circulating SARS-CoV-2 VoC in mice.
