What an amazing sight
A curious whale and her calf surfaced within metres of Australian surfers over the weekend.
Surfers were left stunned on Sunday afternoon when the whale calf, closely followed by her mother, popped up to say hello about 10 metres from where they sat on their boards at Manly Beach, in Sydney. A breathtaking image and video footage show dozens of surfers taking in the surreal sight. Each year, Australia’s east coast comes alive with whales – but it is unusual to see a calf off Sydney this early in the year.
The whales were initially identified as humpbacks, which are usually breeding in tropical waters in Australia’s north between June and August.Whales do not usually make the southerly migration down Australia’s east coast until September However, experts later said they believed them to be southern right whales, which like humpbacks, migrate north before returning to colder waters for the southern summer.Boardrider Josh said he’d never seen a whale calf come so close to surfers and that it was ‘the sort of thing you won’t forget seeing’.
