ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage can see the reality some face daily, in spending the night outside sleeping at Kincaid Park. “Sleeping outside in the middle of the winter, sleeping in a group of people that you don’t know and aren’t sure about.
But trust, it is really their last option,” said Joe Hemphill, Chief Development Officer at Covenant House Alaska. The uncertain experience of homelessness is one that Covenant House Alaska is showing in part at their Sleep Out: Community Edition in Anchorage. “When people do an event like this, what we have found is that they have moved from a space of curiosity into a space of affirmation; that they feel closer to what the experience of homelessness is like for some of these young people,” said Hemphill ahead of Friday night. The event is also a fundraiser for Covenant House Alaska, which serves homeless or at-risk youth in the state. Hemphill says while they’re not encouraging people to pretend that they’re homeless, they can catch a glimpse into some of the realities Anchorage’s homeless population might face: Sleeping in cold weather or wind, surrounded by strangers, and waking early at 6 a.m. “As we have pushed out the messaging and promoting this event, we have heard from people in the Community who are really frustrated and upset about what we call ‘visible homelessness,’” Hemphill said. “What I think is really important to communicate is that the population we serve are not choosing to be homeless, they are coming from situations and circumstances that are really dire, right?” he added. Hemphill estimated nearly 160 are expected Friday night and hopes the event will help the organization reach its fundraising goal of $200,000.3 bodies discovered in University Area apartment prompts APD investigationAnchorage soldier dies during training in South CarolinaFairbanks school leaders: $700 BSA increase would be offset by charter school costs
