Homeowners could be overpaying on their utility bills due to a government oversight.

SALT LAKE CITY —Utah cities determine utility rates for a property based on how it’s being used, and they rely on county property records to get that information. If you’re a homeowner, it’s unlikely you have thought about how the way your property is coded in county records can affect your utility bill.An inaccurate code can cost hundreds of dollars in overcharges for water and sewage fees, and it's something most homeowners are not aware of.

“It's been so extremely frustrating,” she said, “the people who sold it to us listed it on the MLS as a single-family home.” However, the change was not reflected in the property’s records. It stayed listed as a group care home on the county tax assessor's website, and as a duplex with the Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department.Laura Briefer, director of the city’s Department of Public Utilities, said the city charges more for services like sewage and water when a property is listed as commercial or houses more than one family due to the higher amount of waste.
