Learn how to use embodiment techniques to enhance insight and therapeutic outcomes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Embodiment supports insight development by helping clients physically experience DBT skills and concepts.Incorporating embodiment into the therapeutic process can improve therapeutic outcomes. In this post, you will learn how to incorporate embodiment into your practice. Embodiment is defined as when a client’s experience is physicalized and expressed through bodily movement (Jones, 2007).

While it is common in therapy practices to embody other people through role-play, this definition of embodiment also encompasses taking on the roles of specific concepts, emotions, and themes. For example, a client may embody a peaceful place, the feeling of hope, or the DBT skill of Each Action-Based DBT session starts with a warm-up, primary directive, and closing ritual. Please note that in this post, I will be detailing the process of the primary directive; for examples of warm-ups and closing exercises, tune in to future posts. To enrole the client, the facilitator will provide direction to support the client in embodying the role. Strategies to enrole the client may include exploration of physical posture, movement, facial expressions, tone of voice,, and thought processes. The facilitator may encourage clients to reflect on how the role relates to their environment (i.e., “How do you feel about your surroundings—comfortable, uneasy, overwhelmed?”) or to imagine specific details about the “life” of this role (i.e., “What is this role wearing?”,'What did this character eat for breakfast this morning?','What does this role do for fun?'). To de-role the client, the facilitator will guide clients to consciously detach from a role they were previously embodying. Techniques can include directing the client to change their physicality, to identify ways in which they differ from the role, to participate inAfter the clients have participated in warm-ups, the facilitator, who will have a deck of emotion cards, will introduce the DBT skill of understanding and naming emotion
