Among the incentives given to staff included offering discounts to those who packed their food at the canteen using their own containers.

THE Ipoh City Council is encouraging its staff to reduce the use of polystyrene and plastics at the premises.

Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said among the incentives given to staff included offering discounts to those who packed their food at the canteen using their own containers.“Starting July 17, those bringing own containers to buy food at the canteen will get a 30sen discount. “Those using plastic bags will be charged 20sen by the canteen operator, ” he said, adding that the city council has also banned use of polystyrene containers.Rumaizi said the city council banned polystyrene at its premises due to its effects on humans and the environment.

“According to the Health Ministry, it can cause genetic changes in the body, affects the reproduction system and lowers red blood cells. “Polystyrene and plastic can also affect the environment and it takes about 500 years to degrade, ” he said.Rumaizi said more awareness campaigns on the matter would be organised for the staff. On an unrelated matter, Rumaizi said the city’s popular flea market or Memory Lane at Jalan Horley, has resumed operations.“The market will only be held at Jalan Horley and it is still not allowed in Jalan Lim Boh Seng.
