Belgian equestrian Domien Michiels faces Olympic disqualification after accidentally ingesting a banned substance from eye drops administered to his sick dog.
Belgian equestrian athlete Domien Michiels has been disqualified from the individual dressage event at the Paris Olympics after inadvertently testing positive for a banned substance. The International Testing Agency (ITA) stated that an analysis of Michiels' sample revealed the presence of dorzolamide, a prohibited substance. Michiels admitted to administering eye drops containing dorzolamide to his sick dog, leading to the substance entering his system.
While the ITA acknowledges that applying dorzolamide directly to the eyes is permitted, any other form of administration constitutes an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV). Michiels, accepting his disqualification, emphasized that he was not negligent and had no intention to cheat. The ITA confirmed that the only consequence was the annulment of his individual results in the Dressage Team Grand Prix event held on August 3rd in Paris. This case echoes previous instances where athletes have tested positive for banned substances in unusual circumstances. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication, which her team attributed to a mix-up with her grandfather's prescription. This resulted in the Russian Olympic Committee losing its gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Winter Olympics. More recently, tennis star Jannik Sinner tested positive for clostebol after a member of his support team applied an over-the-counter spray for a minor injury. Although Sinner was initially cleared of wrongdoing, the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the decision, leaving him facing a potential two-year ban.
