The service looks after around 500 children

The inadequate Ofsted report into Northamptonshire’s fostering service has “changed” the relationship between a council and the trust that runs it, a senior councillor said. Coun Fiona Baker, West Northamptonshire Council’s cabinet member for children, families and education, said the authority can have limited impact on Northamptonshire Children’s Trust but that it will increase its scrutiny of it.

The trust’s other services were given a rating of requires improvement at an inspection last October, up from inadequate in 2019. The regulator found some things had got better but "considerable variability" in the quality of other areas remained.Labour’s Coun Harry Barrett, shadow member for education, said Tuesday’s report and NCT’s continued underperformance showed WNC’s quality assurance process was “continually failing and failing quite epically”.

She was asked by Coun Danielle Stone, shadow member for children’s services, if she agreed NCT had been “set up to fail” and if she supported splitting it up and eventually returning the services to WNC and NNC. “I think turning it around is taking longer than any we expected but actually there are lots of embedded issues there which need to be addressed and [NCT is] working very carefully and slowly. I agree it’s too slow but we are hoping to have a little more push in that following on from this latest report.”
