The event was overshadowed though by major international maritime developments that cast a cloud of doubt over many of the conversations that were had on Australia’s west coast.This year’s naval celebrations, which were held in several Russian maritime theatres, drew a combined force of some 200 warships and auxiliaries and approximately 15,000 personnel.
The presence of the latter, which followed Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow a few weeks back, undermined the continued efforts by the West to draw New Delhi into its orbit of power At the same time, we continue to demonstrate strategic blindness to the deepening Russia-China defence cooperation.
This sense of misplaced optimism was clear and evident when Defence Minister Richard Marles was questioned on the need for extra security and protection measures once HMAS Stirling becomes Australia’s first nuclear submarine base, while also supporting forward operations of US and UK nuclear submarines in the Indo-Pacific.
