In 'Yes She Can' ten former White House staffers share what they learned working in the Obama Administration.
: every single day, even when things are hard, even when you’re tired -- just continuing to show up and do the work. And that’s true of our government in general. We need people to show up, to participate, to bring their differences of opinion and unique perspectives to the table because policies and programs are determined by the people who show up. At USDS we used to say, “nobody is coming to save us -- it’s up to us” and I completely agree.
While at the digital service, I led our immigration and then our justice portfolios -- so I was fortunate to be able to work on issues that I care deeply about. when I realized my mistakes didn’t ruin anyone’s life, it got a bit easier and I made fewer mistakes. But I still learned something from every mistake, I grew from them, and I now no longer feel like I always need to be perfect. I still strive for perfection, but if I know I put in my best effort, that’s all I can do, and it is good enough. I am good enough.Did you always know that you wanted to pursue a career in government and if so how did you navigate getting to the White House? It hadn’t really occurred to me growing up that government was a career option.

These may seem trivial, but knowing when to ask for help, and being friendly and kind enough that people were willing to help, in addition implementing a process that worked for me were little ways that I knew would help me thrive in my job.
