Compared with their international peers, Australian politicians are no fun at all when it comes to dress-ups.

It was just hours since being sworn in as leader when new Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s coronation was completed with the donning of the ceremonial hard hat at her first press conference in the top job.

At another press conference earlier that month, journalists were told to show up wearing closed-toed shoes but weren’t provided with hi-vis vests or other safety gear. Melbourne mayor Sally Capp, speaking at the presser, wore hi-vis and a helmet with unsafe high heels, the latter – of course – out of shot.when he was young, but that didn’t stop him dressing up for infrastructure photo-ops as premier.

Since the Russian invasion, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky has never been seen without his combat khakis. Regardless of the context, his clothes remind his hosts in the countries he visits that he is at war. With the power of fashion, he has sold the Western world on the need to donate weaponry to defend Ukraine.
