The San Diego-and-Tijuana-trained fighter has a strong following on both sides of the United States-Mexico border
The 28-year old from San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico has split training between Tijuana and San Diego in recent years. He enters Saturday’s scheduled 12-round WBO junior lightweight title bout against Oscar Valdez in Glendale, Ariz., with an impressive record of 37-1-0 .
A victory would not only give Navarrete a title belt, it would also provide something he truly seeks: respect from Mexican fight fans who would view an impressive performance in a win over a fighter like Valdez as validation of Navarrete’s talent, toughness and character., something personified by Mexican legends Marco Antonio Barrera and Eric Morales, who attended Thursday’s weigh in and will be ringside Saturday night.
Navarrete threw a charge into a partisan crowd of Mexican-flag-waving fans at Pechanga Arena with a sixth round knockout of Eduardo Baez last August.
