Jayton Landingham bulls his way for more yardage in the team's easy win Saturday over Texas City. Landingham finished with three TDs.It required 30 plays just to create a tie game and force overtime. It took only two plays to end the drama.
On the team's second play in OT, Jim Gonzalez II darted to his left and scored on a 20-yard run, dramatically lifting the Deer Park Senior Seminoles to a come-from-behind 24-18 victory over the Texas City Bengals in a showdown of South Texas Youth Football Association unbeatens at Clyde Abshier Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was the Seminoles' first lead the entire contest as the team overcame 12-0 and 18-12 deficits in handing the Bengals, Super Bowl Junior division champions in the Bay Area Football League last year, their first STYFA setback. "It was just a big dogfight. Give credit to the Bengals, they're a really good team. That's the closest game we've ever had in two years. For two years, we've been blowing everyone out. We've never been punched in the mouth like that," 12-year-old Seminoles quarterback Gavin Johnston said. The Bengals got first crack at the end zone in the overtime but they just went backwards from the 25. A five-yard penalty, an outstanding tackle by Adan Morales produced a six-yard loss and David Nunn tackled the next Bengals ballcarrier for a three-yard loss. The Tigers got their chance and the game was over in a flash. Josiah Jackson went for five yards and then Gonzalez came up with his touchdown.Deer Park did a fine job of overcoming that 12-0 deficit, tying the game with 7:46 left in the contest only to have Texas City snap the tie 90 seconds later. That could have been such a demoralizing blow, but undaunted, the Seminoles dusted themselves off and manufactured a must-have scoring drive. The team went 65 yards in eight plays for the tying score. Crucial to finding the end zone was a Texas City five-yard penalty as Deer Park was looking at a fourth down and four situation. Then it was eight yards by Jackson, nine yards by Gonzalez and a four-yard keeper by Johnston. Then perched on the eight-yard line, Johnston went to the air, looking for one of his longtime weapons. Grant Smith, the team's 6-foot-1 12-year-old, peeled off to his right and that's where Johnston found him virtually all alone, scoring with 2:02 left in regulation. On the drive's first play, Johnson connected with Jackson for a 25-yard pass that immediately got the team in Bengals territory. Texas City lost despite running back Jhase Carraway having an outstanding game. Carraway scored all three Bengals touchdowns, while rushing for 157 yards. His touchdowns came on rushes of three, 20 and 45 yards.Morales scored the Seminoles' first touchdown and Johnston the second TD. The second touchdown was a gift because the Bengals were on their own eight-yard line facing third down when the team suffered back-to-back three-yard losses. Nunn and John Locklear received credit for the tackles.Jayton Landingham scored three touchdowns in sparking the Junior Seminoles to an easy 42-6 victory over Texas City Saturday. It was a terrific bounce back win for the guys, who lost a two-point heartbreaker to the Deer Park Tigers the previous Saturday. More importantly, heading into the final 30 days of the regular season, it strengthened their grip on a playoff berth. Landingham scored on runs of one and 28 yards, while finishing with a screen pass from Davis Horton that he turned into a 56-yard scamper to paydirt. All 42 points were scored in either the second or third quarters. For Horton, he may have set a personal record in the passing department. He had pass completions of 18, 18, 22, 50, 56, 27 and one for 192 yards. The 50-yarder went to Jacob Hood that upped the lead to 30-0. Oh, and it was Horton who kicked the two-point conversion after that touchdown. Hood was also the recipient of those two 18-yard completions.The Sophomore Seminoles intercepted two passes, helping the team to a 27-0 victory over Texas City Saturday. The highlight was Mason Page stepping in front of a Bengals receiver and going 60 yards for the pick-six, bringing the third quarter to an end. Andrew Polley had the other interception.
