With the finishing line in sight, Succession takes a big, inevitable swing
, a well-written show about repetitive behaviour, has been circling the same ideas for a few seasons now. Brattish, badly-treated children; how power corrupts and humiliates; the emptiness of nice things . Show creator Jesse Armstrong and the team of writers, among themplaywright Lucy Prebble, have made that a mostly enjoyable ride, though it’s impossible to hide that the dynamics are growing a little thin, the fucks a bit forced.
While the first two episodes of this season have been some of the show’s worst, ‘Connor’s Wedding’ will chart as one of’s very best, largely because of the confused stretch following Tom’s call, in which it is not clear whether Logan, who once seemed invincible, could actually be dead. The immediate moments are murky. Tom puts his phone to Logan’s ear, as Roman and Kendall fumble some last words.
And of course, the children. Shiv’s route to power has become increasingly hazy, though as the “progressive” face of the Roy family – and, crucially, the one to issue the press statement – her value is up. Kendall, free from his main antagonist, might just flourish, though you think of his own children and realise those family dynamics simply pass onto the next generation.
Logan’s death galvanises everything for this lot, who have been miserably gathering dust for years. Kendall had a go at something last season, though it amounted to little, and he quickly slunk back to his Shiv and Roman to barrel through ideas: take over the company, launch their own, buy someone else’s. Perhaps Logan’s legacy will be to break up his children, finally united, one last time, because now, finally, there is something to play for.
