The Rylands building is in the process of being transformed behind recognition
Since Debenhams collapsed into administration at the end of 2020, one of Manchester's most iconic city centre buildings has stood empty. The Rylands building on the corner of Market Street and High Street fast became an eyesore, attracting graffiti and anti-social behaviour while its future remained uncertain.
The grade II-listed building was originally constructed as a warehouse for textiles manufacturer Rylands and Sons almost a century ago and became a department store in the 1950s. It had been partly occupied by Debenhams since 1973.was granted exclusive access to the building to see the work being done behind the scenes and what state the landmark is in before the next stage of works begin. A raft of new CGIs have also been published, showing what the finished project will look like.
