Now, these women answer a call of duty every year at midnight on conscription day. It’s an absolutely unhinged plot. Here’s more. Our three leading ladies take the vow to enlist and enroll at Fort Salem, a women’s school that has trained military witches for—I don’t know, a long time—the details are fuzzy and honestly don’t matter. What matters is that this is a show where the protagonist, Raelle Collar , is a GAY. WITCH. COP. It’s like the creator, Eliot Lawrence , ran loglines through a lesbian dream show generator. Wackiness aside, there is something intriguing, standout, and important about this show—it offers a fantasy world where men are truly, utterly irrelevant. Speaking as a lesbian who has decidedly set out to be a gay witch cop: GOALS.Godlessmaterials for the show promised a female-fronted western, about an 1800s town in New Mexico made-up of only women, following a tragic mining accident that killed all the men in town. However, the show didn’t deliver—it was actually a show with two male leads who ride into town, making the “female-only” of it all more of a novelty, background setting than a real premise. I remember watching it, disappointed because I was, if you can get past the cheese—which I definitely can—you can have just that.There’s something to be said about men-less content. Recently, a friend of mine pointed out that there are literally zero men in Céline Sciamma’s evocative lesbian filmI streamed that movie and loved it—slurped it up like a flailing spaghetti noodle. I had no idea until my friend mentioned it that there were no men in the film—I didn’t even. It was such a powerful story about two women falling in love, and it just didn’t call for the presence of men. It was validating, as a gay witch cop, to know that fina-fucking-ly, women are being given the opportunity to carry entire stories, series, films—without so much as needing a man in the story if the story does not call for a man. I often think about Themyscira , the fictional island that Wonder Woman hails from, which was populated solely by women. In the 2017 film, Themyscira is featured briefly, but not enough. The movie ends up handing over a large chunk of spotlight to Steve Trevor in a romantic storyline between him and the titular character. I can’t help but fantasize what a movie set in Themyscira would look like, what it would feel like to have a female-fronted superhero movie that just…wasn’t about men. Even inabout being “emancipated” from men. It’s an overall positive and feminist message, but still, I’m left wondering what an, I get just that. Give it a chance. We’re all currently sinking so far into our couches that we’re about fall through a literal rabbit hole beneath our furniture. You have the time.
