Maryland congressional candidate Joe Vogel criticizes his biggest opponent, April McClain Delaney, for her alleged social and political connections to “extreme Republicans.”
The contest for the Democratic nomination to succeed Rep. David Trone is heating up five weeks out from the party primary, with a second candidate launching a television ad Tuesday that charges a fellow front-runner with having connections to “extreme Republicans.”
Vogel’s ad seeks to draw a contrast with his most prominent opponent, April McClain Delaney, who is the only other candidate in the race with ads on TV.“Delaney donates to extreme Republicans and is friends with Tucker Carlson and Paul D. Ryan,” Vogel said into the camera as small photos flash across the screen of Delaney; Carlson, a former Fox News host; and Ryan, a former House speaker. “I come from the school shooting generation, where we know you can’t hope politicians do the right thing.
Several candidates have drawn attention to the Delaneys’ wealth and connections to D.C.’s political circles, but none has been as pointed as Vogel. At a debate in Frederick, Md., last month, Vogel brought up a decades-old political donation to the reelection campaign of Jim DeMint, a former Republican senator from South Carolina, who once railed against schools hiring gay people or single women, especially unwed mothers, as public school teachers.
