NopeMovie gets a bit lost in its own spectacle, writes rilaws. Read the full review:
, Peele has gathered a host of themes, motifs, and cultural references to play around with, from the overlooked legacy of Black cowboys to a brutal, nationally buzzed-about news story concerning a woman who was mauled by her friend’s chimpanzee. It’s a fascinating olio, but Peele has trouble binding it all into a persuasive whole. Asswerves and reels, it often seems distracted by itself, unable to hold its focus on any one thing long enough for deeper meaning, or feeling, to coalesce.
Once O.J. and Emerald have decided that O.J. did in fact see something alien, they decide they have to capture it on film. For posterity’s sake, sure, but also for money. The horse ranch is in financial danger, the film passingly explains. But really, the siblings’ instinct is to be understood as a much more universal one: here in present-day America, nothing so momentous as this—so beautiful or awful or anything in between—can go undocumented or un-monetized.
