Congresswoman Mary Peltola returned to the Alaska House Chamber Friday and told her former colleagues that their reputation for bipartisanship is a source of awe in the U.S. Capitol.
This was Peltola’s first address to state lawmakers since becoming the only Alaska Native person elected to the U.S. House. The speech was an opportunity to shape the image she wants to convey statewide as the newest member of the state’s congressional delegation. “There were people who wanted, you know, revenge, in these end-of-session deals,” she recounted. “And he said, ‘No, no. Everybody has to save face.’ And I think that’s a real valuable lesson. It really stuck with me as a legislator.”
