The two-time Grammy winner will perform in Fort Worth on Thursday.
Bobby Rush will perform at Tulips in Fort Worth on Thursday night. The 80-something singer won his first Grammy, for traditional blues album, in 2017, and he won another in the same category four years later. After more than 60 years of performing in the shadows of more famous musicians, Bobby Rush is finally getting his due.
But while Black audiences loved his gritty voice and ribald showmanship, Rush barely made a ripple in the mainstream. Growing up in Louisiana, your father was a Black preacher and your mom was a homemaker who was multiracial and often passed for white in public. Was her racial identity confusing to you as a child?
Bobby Rush has worked with many musical legends, including blues singers Muddy Waters and Freddie King. Still, I don’t have no chip on my shoulder. I don’t want people to read my book and feel sorry for me. I want them to know that if a little country boy like me can grow up and make it, they can make it, too. You’ve got to deal with the cards you were dealt.
He was a star in his own right. Johnnie had a big head. Didn’t want to talk to certain people. Didn’t want to sign autographs a lot of times. But he was always nice to me.Muddy Waters was a lot older than me, but we were close, and he gave me more advice than anyone. He lived fast. He smoked a lot and drank a lot, but he didn’t want me to fall into the pit. So he’d say “Blood, don’t do what I do.”
