Conor McPherson's musical masterfully interprets Bob Dylan’s music in an exciting new way
Mrs. Burke and her husband, , are desperate to cling to their prior, more flusher life. “I love playing Mrs. Burke because I love her strength and vulnerabilities,” says Mason who was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for her richly textured performance. “She has extremes of hate and violence. Then there is the extreme where she is trying to cover up all the hurt and pain she is going through,” says Mason. “I get to express all that through dancing and our dialogue and through the drums too.
In fact, Mason learned how to play the drums for the show. “Even though Conor says that we are not our characters when we are playing instruments, you can't help but bring that with you from the scene that just happened,” she explains. “I love channeling the character through my instrument.” Mason, a Broadway veteran, has appeared in over a half dozen Broadway shows. A graduate from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Tommy Tune hand-picked her to star inright out of New York University. Mason also worked with Paul Simon on “The Capeman” and starred opposite Mawtthew Broderick and Megan Mullally in the revival of . In the smash hit Chicago Kathy played Velma to Brooke Shields’ Roxie.
The actress is also a prolific jazz recording artist. Mason’s most recent album, “Triangle,” was produced by Renato Neto, the keyboardist and longtime Prince collaborator.Mrs. Burke is just trying to survive and hold it together. She is trying to not feel the pain of dealing with her husband and son. She is doing the best she can. Also, I get a chance to have a lot of fun with her. At least through the alcohol and morphine she gets to have a release and have fun, dance and be kind of crazy.
It’s terrifying. It's terrifying evry time I walk out to play the drums and sing. Because it’s really difficult to sing and play. I’ve never played the drums before. My heart is just pounding away. In my callback, Conor, our director said, “Do you play any instruments?” I told him, “Piano and guitar.” He said, “We want this character to play the drums. Are you okay with that?” And I said, “Sure, No problem.
