Fundraising for the family of the policeman who shot dead teenager Nahel Merzouk tops $1.6 million, far outstripping donations to victim’s family while exposing deep divide in French society
Spectators deploy a banner which reads "Justice for Nahel" along the race route at the start of the 1st stage of the 110th edition of the Tour de France cycling race in Bilbao, northern Spain, on July 1.
"Will the return to calm last? I would be prudent, but the peak that we experienced these past few days is over," Macron was quoted as saying. French news bulletins also focused heavily on the issue of the competing crowdfunding campaigns for Nahel Merzouk and the police officer, a subject that drew vitriolic reactions from people, laying bare the profound polarisation of French society.
"This police officer is the victim of a national witch-hunt and it is a disgrace," Messiha wrote on social media.
