Kitty Grady didn’t care for Caroline Calloway when she knew her at Cambridge. All these years later, Calloway’s long-awaited memoir, ‘SCAMMER’, might have changed her mind about the notorious Instagram influencer.
It was always going to be hard for Caroline’s first book to live up to my expectations. Not only because it has been so long in the making, but because Caroline’s story arc has already played out so openly in the public eye. Having straddled both sides of the Madonna-whore complex and shifted from hero to villain and back again, Caroline Calloway “the character” is already so richly three-dimensional that it’s hard to imagine what further layering or development a memoir might add.
Knowingly, then, Caroline opens with an anticlimax: “I fuck to be fucked over. I’ve never had an orgasm, but I fake them all the time.” Our protagonist is 30 and has swapped the saturated hues of Instagram for a seasonless, beige Florida: “The view outside blanches blank as if someone forgot to download the world that day.” Yet the opening is less about setting the scene than about proving she can write. “I needed these first paragraphs to slap you like a dead fish to the wet face.
Born in Florida to downwardly mobile parents with a penchant for hoarding, Caroline explores her early obsession with poshness that is cemented at boarding school .is the story of an artist’s genesis, one in which Caroline portrays herself as doggedly, impressively resolute: “Some people are plagued by uncertainty – they don’t know what they want to do with their lives. My affliction is that I have only ever wanted to be one very specific thing,” she writes.
