Amid rising bigotry and threats to marginalized communities, columnist Nancy Kelsey -- a multiracial Clevelander -- calls for true allyship, urging people to actively stand against injustice, rather than remain passively neutral.

As a multiracial woman of color – who is half-Indigenous and half-Salvadoran – I am no stranger to feeling othered in predominantly white spaces, but I have tried to make peace with reconciling who and where I am.
This is, in part, because they were successful in hoodwinking a populace who bought into the misguided and illogical belief in white supremacy and the illusion of solidarity with oligarchs who share their skin color. Those very same voters have more in common with me, as someone who grew up poor and now lives squarely in the middle class, than they do with the wealthy who are benefiting financially from this manufactured division by race.
In recent days, I’ve had the surreal experience of watching proudly delivered Nazi salutes, and I’ve seen countless social media posts about Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids around the country, which will inevitably lead to the cruel separation of more Latino families. I’ve also watched as NATIVE Peoples’ birthright citizenship has been challenged by the new administration. It has been a lot to swallow in such a short period of time.
Native people have long endured a litany of assaults on our civil rights by this nation. But we are still here, and I have to remind myself to channel the strength of my ancestors in what I know will be a difficult time ahead. Like them, I may beAlthough writing this column will undoubtedly invite the ire of some readers, who align themselves with the immoral demagoguery of the current administration, this needs to be said. Some of you have sent really hateful things my way.
