In this new, reimagined version of Emeryville, Oaks Card Club has become one of the few institutions left that define the history of the bayside city.

“It’s definitely a gem,” said Anna Nikitaras, the owner of the Bank Club, a bar down the street and another Emeryville institution. “I know they say Emeryville is becoming better, but for who?”

A 1939 photograph of the Oaks Card Club on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in Emeryville, Calif. The Tibbetts family has owned the East Bay card room since the 1930’s. The Key Hotel at 3908 San Pablo Avenue was built in 1906 and originally named the Santa Fe Hotel. It was located across the street from the Santa Fe train depot and for many decades accommodated railroad passengers. The Key Hotel stood vacant for the 1990s decade and was razed in 2001. At Oak’s Card Club too, things are not what they used to be.
